What type of yoga do you practice?
Sivananda
How long have you been practicing yoga?
Since June 2008.
About Me:
I'm a middle-aged lawyer and university teacher living in London, England with my extended household of four adults, one teenager, two children, two cats, two budgies and a royal python. I am a Christian in the Ignatian spiritual tradition, and keep being startled by how similar Ignatian insights are to yogic ones! The church I attend is a Church of England parish in the liberal Anglo-Catholic strand in Anglicanism. My interests and commitments include civil liberties, human rights, anti-prejudice activism, birdwatching, football and motor racing. As well as yoga, I also belong to and socialise with a dance-based keep fit class.

There really is a condition like that, called dyspraxia! I don't have it myself, but have friends who do. One at school used to baffle the gym teachers by being unable to swim - she would do everything they asked and still not move from the spot, ...

February 18 to 19

Usual practice yesterday - 30 mins asana plus 10 mins meditation. Today, after a run of disturbed nights (probably caused by my partner D sleeping in an unusual position and being a bit restless due to a broken wrist), I finally got a couple of hours of good sleep and then promptly overslept, so I didn't have much time to practise. I was determined to grab a few minutes, though, to keep up my New Year's resolution. Without time for a proper warm-up, I went for some poses that I know are good for… Continue

February 8 to 17: Yoga 2 completed

Great class last night, the last session of our Yoga 2 course. Swamiji was in a really bubbly mood and had us all giggling hysterically by the end. At the same time, it did feel like a workout - lots of arm stuff. We spent most of our time on dolphin and sirsasana, but also did most of the other basic Sivananda poses and added urdhva dhanurasana after setu bandha sarvangasana for the first time. By this time my arms were already tired, but I struggled into the pose, and it felt great! It brought… Continue

February 6 and 7: Ekadasi and pancakes

I did something new yesterday: a partial fast for Ekadasi! This is one of the practices that's encouraged in the Sivananda tradition. Ekadasi days are about once a fortnight in the Hindu calendar. Due to some medical issues, I can't do a complete fast, but I read that a lot of people in India just abstain from grains for Ekadasi, so I thought I'd try that. Since it was my first time and I was a bit nervous about how it would affect me, I decided just to do it up till dinner time and then eat a n… Continue

February 1 to 6

I've mostly just been doing my regular 30 mins asanas and 8-9 mins meditation. I couldn't make it to class this week because the trains weren't running due to snow (the worst we've had in London for 18 years, apparently, so it isn't economic to spend lots of money on better track equipment.) Short practices yesterday and today - yesterday because I was at S's house and there wasn't much space, today because I had to get to an 8.30 client meeting. So not much to report, really!

January 31: one month completed

Yesterday I had a nice practice at my friend R's house. Since I had no mat with me, he generously suggested that I use a lovely quilt that his sister made for him, and it worked really well. So I've completed WoYoPracMo! My New Year's resolution was to practice every day, so that's one month done and eleven to go!

Thanks for the welcome. I agree with you that there are many parallels in yoga philosophy and contemplative Christianity.

Thanks for the welcome LIz. What kind of birds are in your area? Here we have amazing cardinals, yellow finches, robins and plenty of blue jays. With the winters though, only the blue jays and the crows stick around! Let me know how your boat trip goes!!! I love boating! Talk soon.. Lynn :)

Thanks for the friend-ing. I sometimes think it must be unusual combination - teaching at university and yoga. I haven't met many people that do so. They all seem to play squash or something.
