Yogadiva posted a June Summer Sun Salutation and Meditation Challenge over on the Teachers group, but I thought some of us Homebodies might also be interested.

i am back here and back to my yoga practice.... i had a hysterectomy 7 weeks ago tomorrow... i was cleared last Monday the 20th of April to practice yoga again... so i did the next 4 days in a row...and then took a walk on Saturday....

i practiced at home.. don't think i could keep up with a class yet.. even the gentle mostly for seniors class that i go to sometimes.....

i do think i will need classes to advance........ but for right now..i am so inflexible...that what i need to do is master the basics before i try to go on to more advanced poses......

as much as i would like to be able to show off...lol..bad ego bad!

if i had unlimited money..... i'd have unlimited classes... all over the world.... especially in India......

hugs to all,

I practice at home 5 days a week and take a class 1 day a week. Some of this is due to living in the #@!crack of nowhere but now that I think about it I probably would still primarily practice at home even if I lived in a big city with loads of placed to go to. I love my class but I always have that low level anxiety while waiting outside....will I end up with a weird place where my less desirable bits will constantly be waving around in someone else's face? Will I be too near the breeze from the door? Will I fall over and make an ass of myself?
I love what I learn in my classes but mostly I use them as a resource to augment what I do at home. I try things at home (and fail!) that I think I would never do if I only went to classes. For some who have that confidence to try and fail in public then maybe consistent Mysore practice or led practices are perfect but thats just not me. I don't think its about "better" but just about finding whats right for your personality. The price thing also has a part to play....I refused to buy myself new yoga clothes until I had been practicing 6 months. Don't want to be that person with all the right clothes but they wear them walking the dog;)

It's so interesting reading everyone's take on home practice!

I mostly practice at home, but also take the occasional led/mysore class. I find my confidence growing as I practice at home, taking responsibility for my own practice. I do find teachers' assists and comments very valuable though, so I think a combination is what works best for me.

I moved away from yoga buddies so now it's home practice. I do go to a class or two - usually a different tradition from my Ashtanga practice. But I got lucky and a good teacher started Mysore classes in a neighboring town but I only go twice a week. It's been nice practicing at home - doing what I need to do.

So I emailed my teacher to tell her I am not sure I can still clean on Mondays. I am not making it home until 11:30 most Monday's, showering and hitting the bed at 12:00...up again at 5:00/5:30...It is making for a long day and more stress. So I asked if I can clean on Friday's after mysore in exchange for just one class a week.
This leaves only one option for me; really truly sticking to my daily home practice. So I am embracing it; just as it is.

Home practice is becoming such a intimate part of my asana and meditation. I really enjoy the weekly classes but the practice I have at home means so much to me.

My practicing will be at home because I just do not know when I would ever be able to get to a class; between work, children, and going to school. I am just starting yoga and excited at the prospect of learning new things.

My practice is about 80% at home and 20% in class. I can't fit class into my schedule more than once a week, and not always that much, so a home practice is essential for me to make progress. I also think it's important to be able to practise without a teacher, because an important part of yoga (at least in the Sivananda tradition, which I follow) is supposed to be learning to calm the mind without relying on external aids like drugs, television etc. The purpose of asana practice is to calm the mind for meditation and strengthen the body to hold the meditation pose. So if I let myself think I can only practise with a teacher, how will I be able to meditate when the teacher isn't available?

I practice at home by choice. Frankly, I don't have any teachers in my area with whom I want to study. I have a teacher's group I lead which fills me up and I do a lot of conscious studying of poses to take myself deeper. I make sure to study with someone at least once a year. That visit can fill me up for the whole year!
